Why Your AC Runs All Day but Never Cools the House

When an air conditioner runs for hours and the house stays warm, homeowners often assume the worst: the compressor is failing, or the whole system is shot. That is sometimes true, but most of the time the cause is something more specific and fixable. Understanding the four most common causes can help you describe the problem accurately when you call a technician, and it can help you avoid spending money on solutions that will not actually address what is happening.

Dirty evaporator or condenser coils

The evaporator coil inside your air handler absorbs heat from the air in your home. The condenser coil outside releases that heat to the outdoors. Both rely on good airflow and clean surfaces to do their job. When either coil gets coated in dust, dirt, or grime, it loses the ability to transfer heat efficiently. The system keeps running, but it is not moving heat the way it should be.

Dirty evaporator coils are often the result of a clogged air filter that nobody caught in time. Dirty condenser coils happen from yard debris, cottonwood, and the general outdoor environment that northwest Houston produces in summer. Both are serviceable problems, but they require the coils to be cleaned properly, not just sprayed with a garden hose.

Low refrigerant

Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant the way a car burns gas. The refrigerant in the system circulates in a closed loop, and if the level drops, it means there is a leak somewhere. A low refrigerant charge reduces the system's ability to absorb and move heat, which is why the unit runs and runs without ever reaching setpoint.

Adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak is a temporary fix. The level will drop again, usually faster than before. A proper repair finds the source of the leak, seals it, and then recharges the system to the manufacturer's specification. This is a job for a certified technician because refrigerant handling is a regulated trade.

A system that was never sized correctly for the house

An undersized air conditioner will run constantly on hot days because it was never capable of handling the load in the first place. This is more common than most homeowners realize, particularly in homes where a system was replaced without a proper load calculation being done. Bigger is not always better either: an oversized system short-cycles, which creates its own set of problems including poor humidity control.

If the system has always struggled to keep up on the hottest days, this may be the root cause. If it kept up fine in previous summers and has only recently started falling behind, something else is usually the culprit.

Duct leaks

Ductwork that runs through unconditioned attic space is in one of the harshest environments in the house. Connections loosen over time, flexible duct can kink or pull apart at fittings, and older mastic or tape seals fail. When conditioned air leaks out of the duct system before it reaches the living space, the supply side loses both volume and temperature.

A rough indicator of duct leakage is rooms that feel noticeably warmer than others even when registers are open. An uneven house is not always a duct problem, but when combined with a system that is running constantly and not reaching setpoint, it is worth investigating.

When to call a technician

• The system is running for more than 20 to 30 minutes continuously without the house temperature dropping
• The air coming from registers feels only slightly cool rather than noticeably cold
• You can see frost forming on the refrigerant lines or on the unit itself
• There is water pooling around the air handler inside
• The problem started suddenly rather than developing gradually
